In a surprising announcement, Trump pardoned Ross Ulbricht, the Silk Road founder, sparking discussions about justice and government overreach.
Washington: So, guess what? Trump just pardoned Ross Ulbricht, the guy behind Silk Road. You know, that infamous dark web site where people bought all sorts of illegal stuff. It’s a big deal!
Ulbricht was serving a life sentence since 2015. Trump shared the news on his Truth Social account, saying he had a chat with Ulbricht’s mom on his first day in office. He called the whole situation “ridiculous.”
Many folks in the Libertarian crowd have been rallying for Ulbricht’s release, believing the government went too far in their case against him. They’ve been waving “Free Ross” signs for ages.
Silk Road was launched in 2011 and operated on the dark web, where you couldn’t use regular payment methods. Instead, it was all about cryptocurrency, making transactions super hard to trace.
Ulbricht ran the site until he got caught in 2013. The FBI took it down, and during the trial, they claimed some deaths were linked to drugs bought there. They also said he made a ton of money from it.
Since taking office, Trump has been busy with pardons, including around 1,500 people connected to the January 6 Capitol events. It’s definitely a hot topic right now!
