Toronto police have seized a record amount of cocaine linked to a notorious cartel, making a significant impact on drug trafficking in Canada.
The police found 475 kilograms of cocaine hidden in a truck, while the rest was discovered in stash houses. This operation is part of a larger drug trafficking scheme that started in Mexico.
This seizure is part of an ongoing investigation called Project Castillo, which kicked off back in August. Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw mentioned that this cocaine would have made its way across Canada, from Newfoundland all the way to British Columbia.
Demkiw expressed how important this bust is for community safety, saying that getting 835 kilograms of cocaine off the streets will really help. Six people were arrested, including two Mexican nationals and four Canadians.
There are still three suspects on the loose, with warrants out for their arrest. The Jalisco cartel is notorious for producing fentanyl, which has caused a staggering number of overdose deaths in the U.S. each year.
