Authorities in Mexico have uncovered 56 bodies in unmarked graves near the U.S. border, raising concerns about cartel violence.
Chihuahua: So, there’s been a pretty shocking discovery in northern Mexico. Local prosecutors announced that they found at least 56 bodies in unmarked graves. This is really close to the U.S. border.
The remains include a mix of complete bodies, skeletons, and some partial remains. They also found clothing and bullet casings. This operation, which involved the military, took several days to complete.
Right now, they’re trying to figure out who these victims are. The remains have been sent to a forensics lab to determine how and when they died. Fingers crossed they can identify them.
This area, known as “El Willy,” is under the control of a criminal group linked to the Juárez cartel. It’s a tough spot, especially with all the cartel violence going on.
Mass graves like this aren’t exactly rare in Mexico. The country has over 345,000 people reported missing, which is just heartbreaking. Just last month, authorities found 12 more bodies in similar graves in Chihuahua.
Since 2006, when Mexico really ramped up its fight against drug cartels, more than 450,000 people have been murdered. It’s a grim situation.
Back in 2017, one of the largest mass graves was found near Veracruz, with over 250 skulls discovered. It’s a stark reminder of the ongoing violence in the region.
